Marketplace | Truck MpgPosted on May 12, 2010. What do you think the average MPG for a semi truck? I know that different factors affect a truck mpg (speed, weight, condition of roads, etc.), but was wondering if you could tell me what the mpg average for a typical tractor. Any websites or statistics would also help. Thank you. Assuming that a typical semi truck with a full load, I think their average MPG is in the range 4-6, but I think some of the new trucks get better mileage a bit too.
Something to remember that while 4-6 MPG sounds terrible, consider how much gas you burn up the load even much of the semi at the back of the car, even the most efficient fuel station / SUV / minivan. The tractor-trailer is still far and above more fuel efficient. most modern tractors, with aerodynamics through high roof fairings and cab to 7 mpg while pulling a trailer-type van. As you mentioned, there are many factors that can affect fuel mileage of a truck. the air resistance and rolling drag due to under-inflated tires are two key factors to the speed of the road. Studies have shown for each mph over 55, fuel consumption is reduced by.1 mpg.
Examples of mileage for trucks I drove.
1967 Mack DM800 10-wheel dump = 5 mpg 1977 Kenworth W900 dump mpg trailer = 4 to 4.5 1989 Ford LTL 9000 with van sec = 5.5 to 5.8 mpg 1989 Ford LTL 9000 with flat = 6.0 to 6.2 mpg 2007 Freightliner Century Class S / T = 7.2 sec with Van mpg broader 3-7000 per gallon on average
