PHOENIX - Thousands of people across the country marched through the Arizona State Capitol on Saturday to protest against the harsh state repression on new illegal immigration.

The demonstrators carried placards, banners and flags of the United States and Mexico completed a five-mile from downtown Phoenix. Dozens of police lined the route, and helicopters flew overhead.

The police refused to estimate the size of the crowd, but it seems at least 10,000 to 20,000 demonstrators braved temperatures that were expected to reach 95 degrees in mid-afternoon. Organizers said they expected the demonstration to bring as many 50,000 people.

Opponents of the law have suspended their boycott against Arizona and transported by bus from protesters across the country. Some have used umbrellas or cardboard to protect their face from the sun. Volunteers handed out bottled water in the bed of pickup trucks, and the organizers of the creation of three water stations along the route.
