Motor Trends HoustonWhat you should know about drinking and driving

drunk driving occurs when a person takes more alcohol than their body can absorb causing them to become intoxicated after which he or she chose to drive a motor vehicle while intoxicated. The name varies from state to state. It can be identified as DUI (driving under the influence), CFA (driving while intoxicated), or Yes! (Driving a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol). The call letters are not important (after all, a rose by any other name is still a rose), unless, of course, they are linked to your name. When this happens then they spell trouble.

Every 39 minutes another person killed in road accidents drunk. That's about 13,500 people each year - the population of a small iceberg that the points of the campaign of any state in the nation. Ten years ago, that number was lower than it is today! It is difficult to believe that, despite factors such as the aggressive campaign of public service financed by various agencies concerned, stricter sanctions for legal and financial people who are caught drinking and driving, and a much increased awareness of law enforcement officials did nothing to alleviate the statistics. (This reality simply addles mind.) Let's take a look at the laws and statistics on the books in Texas.

Drivers with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 are considered intoxicated and driving while impaired. A driver convicted of the offense for the first time a mandatory license suspension of 90 days, a second offense and increases the time of suspension of 180 days. The same goes for a third offense. In addition, there is a mandatory prison sentence for anyone convicted of drunk driving twice (or more). The vehicles will be confiscated after a third conviction and there will be no availability of a permit difficulties.

shows data for a recent year available trends driving while impaired. For example, one third of drivers killed in a single year of impaired driving has decreased between the ages of 21-24, another third between the ages of 25-34 years and one third were aged 35-44. It seems that people in positions of middle age are more sensitive about taking risks with driving and drinking. The question is how to impose the same integrity and prudence in the three other age groups.

Another surprising fact about drinking and driving that men are four times more likely to be arrested for impaired driving than women. Too much death on the road at night is four times more likely to be caused by a drunk driver during the day. (This would lead to think twice before running out of milk at 9:00 in the night.) Finally, the mean blood concentration of the alcohol content of a drunk driver who kills someone in a car accident is 1.6 - twice the legal threshold for a person to be charged with impaired driving.

The state of Texas, and many others, has a zero tolerance law in the books. These laws are designed specifically to infants who are at the origin. Zero tolerance means that minors must have a blood alcohol level of 0.00. There is no alcohol in the system of a minor at all. In this case the minor is subject to more severe penalties and consequences. Why? Firstly, it is illegal for minors to ingest alcohol (even if, realistically, drinking and minors is a major problem everywhere, and a topic for another time). Secondly, driving is a complex task that requires the attention of the driver. Many challenging skills such as entering the freeway from a ramp and a tractor passing seventy miles an hour to take multiple tries to execute them with ease and confidence. Therefore, minors do not need distractions. Ultimately, drinking and driving is illegal and, frankly, with the plethora of information designed to discourage participation in an activity, stupid.
