Gas Efficient Cars

I am thinking of buying a 2009 Hyundai Sonata, which gets about 32 mpg on the highway but I was wondering if they'll have more affordable gas efficient cars in the years to come. What are your thoughts on buying a new car now or later?

Things that are more effective than what you plan to:

1) Prius or another hybrid sedan, available now
2) VW Jetta TDI or rabbit, which was released about a month. I think the Jetta is expected to arrive at something in the 40s. I drive a 1999 Jetta TDI myself, and get about 47mpg on the highway even with my lead foot. It is not hard to find diesel. It's not as dirty as it was in the 70s.
3) Chevy Volt coming in the next few years
4) Toyota plans to make a plug-in Prius soon, so the first 40 miles after a charge may be all-electric
5) Tesla Whitestar and Bluestar are all-electric, coming in the next few years rumored
6) Think Ox (Think is a Norwegian car company, Ox is a model name) should be available in the United States in 2012. This is another all-electric, but can go up to about 85 mph and about 150 miles on one charge, even better than the current electric cars
7) Smart cars are available in the U.S. today, and get pretty good mileage. I think that more than 32 but not quite sure.

Personally, I'll try to keep my 10 years Jetta running until QuickList come here in the United States. Fixing things when it breaks is certainly cheaper than making a car payment ... On other hand it is annoying and I want a car that "runs". So I think to test drive one of TDI news this week, then get on the waiting list.

It's a crap-shoot. They say they will come with fuel efficient cars in 2010, but (a) they have already rudely efficient cars now, and (b) at any time you make a new car with a new design will be have bugs that need to be developed.
