Like many other majors worldwide automotive, German luxury automaker BMW components automatically the source of India. The company has established its international purchasing office in New Delhi to procure its needs worldwide auxiliary.

"We will set up an international purchasing office will be headed by an expatriate to take care to supply components for the global operations of BMW," BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said Tuesday. Kronschnabl said the proposed international purchasing office will be operational in August this year and be independent of the purchasing unit of the company in Chennai to meet his Indian operations.

Kronschnabl added: "Once the procurement team is in India, they will consider this type of source components to be here." Unit Purchase BMW India and purchasing office International are designed to work individually, in tandem or in groups to create more realistic approach based products. He refused to take a call on the quantum of components that BMW was looking for the source of India saying it was too early to tell. He did not reveal the outsourcing goals, but said that some computer components are originally from India.

Kronschnabl added a study is to find the feasibility of launching the Mini. Despite being a "small" car, the Mini is not cheap - at home in Germany, it costs about Rs 10 lakh, while imports in India CBU would inflate its price at Rs 18-20 lakh range. The same is the case with the 7 series cars, which are also in the super premium bracket.

The locally-assembled 3-series, in contrast, is priced between Rs 26.7 to 32 lakh, while for the 5-series would cost Rs 37-42 lakh. The 3-series will always be equipped with cutting edge features such as better fuel filter BMW , engine, radiator and more enigmatic aura.

The German automaker has revised its sales target for 2007 in anticipation of the positive response to its recently launched 3 Series Sedan plant in Chennai. Turnover has been revised from approximately 1,000 cars to 1,200 units starting in India in the calendar year as the company plans to deploy its models 'Series 5' plant in Chennai in June, Kronschnabl said.

BMW has marked 2007 as "Year of India" through the global operations, and not without reason. The main EU has set up an assembly plant in Chennai, where it produces the 3-Series and 5 Series sedans,, committing a‚¬ 20,000,000 investment in the process. But more companies are on the road.

"BMW is focused on India and we believe this market has great potential. We are evaluating India for our cars and mini-series for seven-time. With the premium car segment to grow at a steady pace we seek to expand the presence of BMW here, "noted Kronschnabl. BMW is thinking to increase component sourcing from India as it evaluates the feasibility of the market for its popular Mini cars in Round 7.
