It is common to hear them said on television, scribbled on brochures, and even in casual conversation. The question is - what they are? Many people do not really know, and this can lead to confusion. STD - Sexually Transmitted Diseases Whats an STD? "STD" is shorthand for "sexually transmitted diseases." Princeton STD defines as "a venereal infection ... transmitted infections transmitted through sexual intercourse or genital contact. "It seems simple enough - STDs are diseases that can, generally, can be contracted through sexual intercourse with an infected person, although in rare cases can be transmitted by contact with a dirty toilet seat or sharing unwashed towels. It is more common among younger people with multiple sexual partners of STDs, but anyone can get one - age is not a factor. - Chlamydia - The CDC estimates that about 1.1 million people infected with chlamydia each year. This STD can be treated with medication if caught early enough. However, if early symptoms are ignored or go unnoticed, it can have serious consequences, including infertility.
- Genital herpes - is suspected that about 45 million people have genital herpes. Genital herpes is extremely easy to catch, is transmitted during outbreaks and may even be asked if there are no visible signs of a recovery. It is uncomfortable and sometimes painful but not deadly, can be somewhat controlled by medication.
- Genital HPV - The CDC says 20 million people currently living with HPV and 6.2 million suspected longer catch him in the next year. HPV is particularly worrisome because of its potential to cause cervical cancer in women and penile cancer in men. - Trichomoniasis - about 7.4 million people each year report of STDs. It is more common and women and is completely curable. If left untreated, however, it can lead to infertility and increased risk of HIV
- Viral Hepatitis - about 1.4 million people currently living with this disease. There is a vaccine because it is necessary that in many schools which reduces the risk, if not eliminate it completely. However, if you do not receive this vaccine, there is no cure for hepatitis B and tends to cause severe liver damage leading to death.
